Abstract

The rapid social, technological and economic transformations of the twenty-first century have fundamentally changed the expectations towards education and the competencies required for successful personal and professional development. Contemporary educational systems increasingly emphasize the development of transversal competencies that enable learners to transfer knowledge across different contexts, adapt to change and participate effectively in society. The purpose of this paper is to examine the conceptual foundations of transversal competencies and to analyze their significance as a basis for lifelong learning and competency-based education. The study applies a theoretical research design based on literature review, comparative analysis and conceptual synthesis of contemporary scientific publications and international educational frameworks. Particular attention is paid to UNESCO, OECD, the European Key Competences Framework and the LifeComp framework. The analysis demonstrates that transversal competencies extend beyond subject-specific knowledge by integrating cognitive, social, personal and socio-emotional dimensions of learning. These competencies facilitate critical thinking, collaboration, communication, adaptability and responsible decision-making, thereby strengthening the practical application of knowledge in authentic situations. As a theoretical contribution, the paper proposes a conceptual model of transversal learning that integrates personal, social, cognitive and practical dimensions into a coherent framework for competency development. The findings highlight the necessity of embedding transversal competencies across all educational levels and learning environments. Future research should focus on empirical validation of the proposed model and on developing reliable approaches for assessing transversal competencies within competency-based education.
